“Once he arrived in Fargo, he underwent surgery on his brain that lasted just over two hours, where they removed portions of his skull, in order to release the pressure from his brain,” the school continued in their statement, adding, “For context, the pressure in the average person’s brain is a 4, his was many times more than that.”

Donovan was released to the intensive care unit following the procedure, “and is under some of the best medical care in the midwest,” according to the statement.
On Sunday, Donovan’s “eyes reacted to light in a normal manner, which cause the neurosurgeon to say last night was a win,” the statement continued. “He is still in a medically induced coma and is fighting like crazy. Your prayers are working and encouraged at this time.”
A GoFundMe was established by Donovan’s sister, Ashley, and has already raised more than $81,000 of the $95,000 goal as of Tuesday, Sept. 22. Ashley said in the fundraiser’s description that her brother “was involved in a head-to-head collision, and after the impact he collapsed.”
“It was quickly discovered that he had a brain bleed, and he was life flighted to Fargo, ND, where he underwent a craniotomy,” Ashley said.
The family is looking to raise funds for hotels and food while Donovan is in the hospital, as well as medical expenses “related to his care and recovery.”
Simpson University donated to the GoFundMe, writing, “Matt, all of us at Simpson University, our Athletic Department, and our football family are lifting you up in prayer. We ask for healing, strength, peace, and comfort. You are being held close in our hearts and minds today and in the days ahead.”
