Ingolstadt sack pioneering female coach Sabrina Wittmann

Sabrina Wittmann has been relieved of her duties as FC Ingolstadt head coach after three defeats in the club’s last four games left them 13th in the 3. Liga table.

The decision was communicated to Wittmann on Thursday, bringing an end to her two-year spell in charge.
“This decision follows an intensive assessment of the team’s sporting development and results across the season, as well as their performances so far in the 3. Liga," said FC Ingolstadt managing director for sport and communications Harald Gärtner.
"Against this backdrop, we believe a new direction is necessary in order to provide fresh impetus for the challenges ahead. On a human and personal level, this has been a very difficult decision for us.”
Wittmann, who became the first female head coach in Germany’s top three divisions of men’s football when she took charge of Ingolstadt in 2024, said:
“I would have very much liked to continue and carry on this journey with a team full of exceptional characters. Unfortunately, the trust is no longer there and the club has decided to pursue a different solution.
"Ingolstadt was more than just a club to me. It was my home. This is where I grew up as a footballer and where I made so many special memories. The club, along with all its people and staff, has become very close to my heart. I wish the club nothing but the very best for the future.”
