One of MLB’s most notable traditions is its postseason-clinching celebrations. After clinching a playoff spot or moving on in a postseason series, teams celebrate in the locker room by spraying bottles of champagne. The Chicago Cubs clinched a playoff spot on Thursday and had their champagne celebration. While some of the players lack playoff experience and got to experience the celebration for the first time, others, such as shortstop Dansby Swanson, are postseason-clinching celebration veterans. Swanson is well aware of the burn of champagne getting in one’s eyes, so he was rocking goggles while his teammates sprayed champagne at him during an interview with Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network.

Swanson stood by his strategy even when McGregor teased him for being “soft” because of the goggles. Right after her question, champagne was sprayed right at the shortstop’s face.

“Example A, example A,” Swanson told McGregor. “No, this is smart, smart.”

McGregor then admitted she agrees with him before asking if the champagne celebrations ever get old for Swanson.

“I mean, no, this is like a step in the journey of what we ultimately want to accomplish,” Swanson responded. “This group has gone through so much this year.”

The Cubs had a big day on Thursday to say the least, as Pete Crow-Armstrong reached 40 stolen bases to record a 40/40 season in the playoff-clinching win. Chicago earned a competitive 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins in the game.

The Cubs have one final three-game series against the Red Sox in Boston this weekend before the postseason begins next week.
