Jaxon Smith-Njigba hits back at Ja’Marr Chase over double-teaming ‘questions’

Jaxon Smith-Njigba has established himself as one of the best, if not the best, wide receivers in the NFL over the last 12 months.
Alongside lifting the Super Bowl trophy in February, the Seattle Seahawks wideout was also crowned the Offensive Player of the Year for the 2025 season.

However, his success has come with some bitterness from others, with Ja’Marr Chase’s campaign to boost his own reputation still ongoing.
Despite Smith-Njigba getting off to an undeniable season with the Seahawks, Chase still had some questions about his game.
“Why he ain’t getting doubled yet? That’s what I be trying to figure out. I got doubled on second and 10, by a linebacker and a corner,” Chase said.
Well, Smith-Njigba has responded during a recent interview with NFL presenter Rich Eisen ahead of their trip to face the Washington Commanders this weekend.

Through the opening two weeks of the Seahawks’ season, Smith-Njigba has been able to rack up 277 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
The 24-year-old shone against the Arizona Cardinals at the weekend and has maintained his levels despite the injury to Sam Darnold.
“Man, he’s [Brian Fleury] done an excellent job. I think there have been questions about how I’m not getting double-teamed and stuff like that. I think, just from the first meeting, we’re going to run the ball. That’s where our ego and pride lie,” Smith-Njigba said.
“We’re going to run the ball, and I think teams have to respect that. We’re sticking to who we are. I think he’s done a great job of putting me in motion and being able to line up everywhere on the field.”
On the back of their Super Bowl success, the Seahawks have seen some significant changes behind the scenes.
Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak left to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, who’ve started off 2-0, but the transition to Brian Fleury has been almost seamless.
Having a player of Smith-Njigba’s quality certainly helps, and he will have his eyes on a Commanders defence who he put up 129 yards against last season.
