As a hopeful Manchester United supporter, I can see why this report will split opinion, but I actually think there is sense in it. Mateta is not the glamorous name that gets everyone racing to social media, yet this squad badly needs practical help. We have seen too often what happens when one striker is carrying the load and then breaks down. The whole attack starts to look thin, predictable and easy to manage.
If Sesko is going to remain central to the long-term plan, then he needs proper support. Not just a body on the bench, but someone with Premier League experience who can start games, come on late, bully defenders and nick goals in scrappy matches. Mateta looks like that sort of player. He knows the division, he has size, and he would not arrive needing six months to adjust.
The Zirkzee angle also feels believable. Sometimes a move simply does not work, and if Palace like him, then United should be ruthless and smart. Shift a player who has not settled, bring in one who can help immediately, and give the manager more dependable options for the second half of the season.
Would Mateta be the final piece in rebuilding United? No. But could he be a useful one? Absolutely. And right now, useful might be exactly what this club needs most.
