Ronaldo announced the decision on Instagram on Wednesday evening, shortly after head coach Jorge Jesus spoke at his pre-match press conference in Copenhagen. PerSky Sports' translation, he wrote:

"Following the national team manager's press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team's training camp. In due course, I will tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure from the national team, to which I have always been dedicated. Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception."

Reports of a rift had grown since Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute in Sunday's 2-1 win over Norway, with his replacement Goncalo Ramos scoring.

It was only the third time Ronaldo has gone unused for Portugal, in an international career that has spanned a record-breaking 234 caps and 146 goals since his debut 23 years ago. He did not train on Monday or Tuesday and The FPF have not reported any injury.

A meeting between Ronaldo, Jesus and FPF president Pedro Proenca was scheduled for Wednesday to clear the air,The Athletic reported. Jesus, who coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, insisted "there was no incident whatsoever".

"It's true we had an agreement. I told Cris that he would not play against Norway or Denmark. I have worked with him for a year. I am completely aware of his physical capabilities and I know, because I did this in Saudi Arabia already, that when there are games every three days, Cris rarely played (in both games)."

Jesus acknowledging that he had told Ronaldo he would likely play against Norway, before changing his mind because of the circumstances of the match.

He admitted it was a mistake to send Ronaldo to warm up for so long without using him, but stood firm on his authority.

"I can promise whatever I want, I'm the coach. No player will ever make a decision for me."

The situation leaves Ronaldo's international career in the balance. At 41, some expected Ronaldo to call time on his Portugal career after the 2026World Cup exit to Spain, but the veteran decided to continue into this month's Nations League campaign.

Ronaldo captained Portugal to their first-ever major tournament success at Euro 2016, and also lifted the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He holds the all-time records for goals and caps in men's international football.
