The play later received a strong reaction from a former NFL player, who said it could add fuel to existing conspiracy theories surrounding NFL officiating.

Former NFL QB flags referee timing on Patrick Mahomes hit

The Kansas City Chiefs were leading the Miami Dolphins 14-10 late in the third quarter when a controversial penalty involving Patrick Mahomes became a major talking point. Kansas City had the ball at its own 5-yard line on third-and-9 when Mahomes dropped back to pass.

Mahomes threw toward Rashee Rice as Dolphins edge rusher Chop Robinson made contact with him. Mahomes went to the ground after releasing the pass, which fell incomplete. The officials then called Robinson for roughing the passer.

The penalty gave the Chiefs 15 yards and an automatic first down. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel later shared video of the play and questioned how quickly the referee appeared to reach for his flag.

“Watch this ref. Let’s see how quickly he pulls the flag out. So that’s a little bit—that’s a little bit weird. Already going to it. Already going to it, right? He’s pulling for it already. That’s crazy. Like, the flag is out before he even finishes the act,” Daniel said in the video.

Daniel’s main point was the timing of the flag. He noted that the referee appeared to move toward the flag before the contact between Robinson and Mahomes had fully ended, raising questions about when the decision to call roughing the passer was made.

The same play also included a defensive holding penalty against Miami’s Zach Sieler. That meant the Chiefs would have received a first down from the holding call even without the roughing-the-passer penalty. However, Daniel’s video focused specifically on the timing of the flag for Robinson’s contact with Mahomes.

Seth Joyner later shared Daniel’s video and criticized the NFL and its officiating. The former NFL linebacker wrote, “This is such a bad look for the @NFL & @NFLOfficiating. This adds fuel to the conspiracy theories! SMDH.”

Joyner’s comments intensified criticism of the officiating decision. His reference to conspiracy theories pointed to claims that officials have given Kansas City favorable treatment.

Joyner did not provide evidence of a conspiracy. His comment addressed how the video and the disputed call could add to those existing theories surrounding Chiefs games.

Mahomes finished the game with 246 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception as Kansas City secured the win.

Although the drive would have continued because of the separate holding penalty, debate over the play persisted throughout the week as analysts and former players focused on the timing of the roughing-the-passer call.

Chiefs carry perfect start into Raiders matchup

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, October 4. The game will be played at Allegiant Stadium with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET. Both teams enter the AFC West matchup with 3-0 records.

The Chiefs opened the season with a 31-10 win over the Denver Broncos before beating the Indianapolis Colts 33-30 in overtime. Kansas City enters the Raiders game with a perfect 3-0 record after its first three games.

In the Dolphins game, Rashee Rice caught seven of nine targets for 88 receiving yards. Travis Kelce added two receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. His 11-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter extended the Chiefs’ lead. Both players are expected to remain key contributors against Las Vegas.

Kenneth Walker III has also spoken about the importance of finding a rhythm at his position. He said, “Yeah, definitely. At this position, you get a rhythm. I feel like when you get the rhythm, you’re able to play fast and be yourself. Also, the way we practice, it makes it much easier in the game,” Walker said.

The Chiefs will also have to manage injuries before facing Las Vegas. Offensive tackle Josh Simmons has been dealing with a back injury and did not practice before Week 4. His absence could force Kansas City to make adjustments up front. Simmons’ status remains worth monitoring heading into Week 4.

Safety Chamarri Conner had also been dealing with a knee issue, but he took part fully in Wednesday’s practice ahead of Week 4. His return to full participation puts him in a different position from Simmons as the Chiefs prepare for the Raiders.

Kansas City enters the Raiders matchup undefeated after a win over Miami. Debate surrounding the roughing-the-passer penalty on Patrick Mahomes continued during the week, with Chase Daniel questioning the timing of the flag and Seth Joyner criticizing the optics of the decision.
