Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris was not extremely pleased after the NFL London Game, where his team faced off against the Indianapolis Colts.

Firstly, the Commanders suffered a 13-30 loss to the Colts and looked completely off their best throughout the game. Playing without their star QB Jayden Daniels, the offence was unable to produce anything impressive and ended up with just one touchdown.

This was the team’s third defeat of the season, and now places them at the bottom of the NFC East standings. However, that was not the only reason Harris was concerned.

Harris was not the happiest about the London game

The game in London was considered a home fixture for the Commanders. Due to this, the team will lose some income coming in, even though the NFL provides a fee for home teams to offset the loss made due to missing out on gate receipt payments at their own stadiums.

The NFL also covers a lot of the cost of travel and accommodation for players and equipment, but Harris stated that the economics still did not work out.

“It’s not good,” laughed Commanders owner when asked if the international home game was financially viable for the team. “It’s bad in a lot of ways. But I’m not so much focused on economics, honestly. I’m focused on being part of the NFL community and growing the game internationally.”

According to Forbes, the Northwest Stadium collects $87.1 million in net gate receipts alone. While this ranks them only 27th on the list, losing out on the home game revenue is definitely a big hit for them.

However, the team president, Mark Clouse, is looking at it positively.

“I would describe it as an investment in the future of the league and the team,” said Clouse in an interview with Sportico. “That’s the way we have to look at it.”

The NFL plans on adding international games in the coming years, and this means more teams will have to play their home games abroad. This may, in the present, affect the revenue of the teams, but with the game growing globally, the potential to increase earnings can grow significantly.
