It was not clear what charges have been invoked against them.

The two leaders, along with other Opposition leaders, had entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises, next to the Election Commission headquarters, and staged a sit-in demanding a meeting with Kumar and the other election commissioners. Gandhi said around 300 Opposition MPs wanted to meet the poll panel.

The police cleared the protest around 8 pm, and the leaders were detained and released later at night.

Gandhi later said that the authorities were trying to protect the “traitors” of democracy.

“There will be a reckoning – not a single traitor will be spared,” the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said in a social media post.

The Opposition’s sit-in came as protests are being held in several parts of the country calling for Kumar to resign over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
