Shortly before Game 3's first-pitch, MLB announced that Miller was placed on the paternity list. He was replaced in San Diego's rotation by Wandy Peralta.
San Diego Union-Tribune's Annie Heilbrunn reported that Miller's wife went into labor on Tuesday afternoon, earlier than the family initially expected.
Miller can take leave of as long as three days before returning to action. He had hoped the baby would come while the Padres were at home to prevent him from missing too much time, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. However, he had no desire to miss the birth of his first-born child.
San Diego already has its work cut out for it to keep its World Series hopes alive. Without its flame-throwing hurler, that task got that much harder.
