He was one of those accidental positives that happened under Mike Ashley and then ultimately a wasted opportunity.

Demba Ba came to Newcastle United for free due to Graham Carr hearing he had a relegation clause if West Ham were relegated.

The striker scored 29 goals in 54 Newcastle United appearances and was a key reason why United finished top five in his first (2011/12) season.

Mike Ashley refused to reward him and others with improved contracts and the owner also refused to allow a penny of net spend in summer 2012 to build on that accidental breakthrough season.

Newcastle United as a result almost went from top five to instant relegation and only stayed up when winning the final away game of the 2012/13 season at QPR. Demba Ba had chose to move to Chelsea halfway through that season when Chelsea offered to pay his £7.5m release clause, Mike Ashley refusing to do anything to try and convince him to stay.

Anyway, all of that is now history….

Back to the present day and Demba Ba is Director of Football at Le Havre, appointed this summer to the Ligue 1 club.

The former United star is enjoying the job even though they are currently rock bottom of Ligue 1.

Demba Ba interviewed by French media and saying: “When I watch any match I always tell myself that I want to learn something…that said, when the Le Havre project eventually comes to an end I might well do nothing for a while…simply focus on my academy in Senegal and also travel.”

The former Newcastle United striker also telling So Foot: “I have a desire to meet more people, to exchange ideas, watch matches just for the pleasure of it all. For instance, I have never been able to get to go and see a game at St James’ Park since leaving Newcastle United, even though it is something I dream of doing. One day I hope to.”
