South Western Railway Observes Swachhata Pakhwada With Extensive Cleanliness And Awareness Activities

South Western Railway (SWR) is observing Swachhata Pakhwada from 1st October 2026 with cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns, tree plantation and sanitation activities to promote hygiene, environmental sustainability and public participation.
On 1st October, under the “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath” initiative, 79 Shramdaan events were conducted across 29 stations and 23 railway colonies, involving 1,960 participants. Passenger awareness included 19 “Meri Seat Mera Dabba” drives and 34 pledge campaigns through pamphlets, reaching 1,250 passengers.

On 2nd October, Swachh Bharat Diwas, SWR organised 215 Swachhata pledge events involving 2,932 staff and 5,590 passengers. Under “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, 42 plantation drives resulted in 388 saplings being planted. Additionally, 31 awareness drives, including Prabhat Pheris and Swachh Raths, covered 28 stations and 15 colonies, with 1,013 participants.
From 3rd to 5th October, 280 station-cleaning drives covered 93 stations, 950 water outlets and 5.2 km of drains. Catering facilities were covered through 42 drives, with five kitchens cleaned and 29 pantries inspected. Another 85 drives covered waiting areas, retiring rooms and rest houses, cleaning 110 such facilities and 191 washrooms. In addition, 90 cleaning drives covered 211 offices and administrative buildings.
From 6th to 8th October, 36 trackside cleaning drives covered 37.5 km of track, collecting 592 units of waste. All 12 identified Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs)/Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) were transformed.
The 9th–10th October phase focuses on removing unwanted posters, banners and illegal advertisements, eliminating spitting spots, beautifying locations and promoting the “No Spitting” message.
From 11th to 15th October, activities will focus on awareness of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, waste segregation, Bulk Waste Generator registration and waste-management facilities. Three briefing sessions involving 20 participants have been conducted, and 10 awareness posters displayed. Further efforts will promote four-stream waste segregation and sustainable waste management.
