Patriots vs. Raiders live updates: Score, news, discussion for NFL Week 5
· Yahoo Sports
For the New England Patriots, Sunday will be a day of celebration. Wearing their red throwbacks in front of the Gillette Stadium crowd, they will honor the 2021 Super Bowl champions as a whole as well as recent Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Adam Vinatieri individually.
Whether or not the day as a whole will be remembered as a celebratory one, however, will be determined by the result on the field. For the Patriots this means beating the visiting Las Vegas Raiders to win a second straight game and improve their record to 3-2 on the year.

Will they be able to do so? Let’s find out together. Welcome to our Patriots-Raiders live tracker and community discussion.
Live score: Patriots 38 : 17 Raiders

First QuarterStarting on defense after winning the coin toss, the Patriots’ short-handed secondary got some early work and looked good. Following a short run, Charles Woods and Kindle Vildor helped break up Kirk Cousins pass attempts to force a quick three-and-out.
Unlike the Raiders, the Patriots were able to move the ball on their first possession. Pass plays to Romeo Doubs — the first of which resulting in a 24-yard defensive pass interference call — moved New England into the opponent’s territory quickly. Once there, Drake Maye connected with a wide-open DeMario Douglas from 35 yards out to cap a five-play, 76-yard drive with a touchdown. | Patriots 7 : 0 Raiders

The Raiders came close to going three-and-out again, but instead went to their favorite target to set the tone for their entire second possession: 6-foot-4 Brock Bowers, whose size advantage over 5-foot-8 Marcus Jones was on full display on a 24-yard pickup to move the chains on a 3rd-and-2. Las Vegas kept advancing the ball after that play, including on a dubious pass interference call against Kevin Byard that allowed the team to set up shop in the New England red zone. Once there, Kirk Cousins again connected with Bowers with Jones in coverage for a 13-yard touchdown. | Patriots 7 : 7 Raiders
The Patriots began their second drive with a pair of chunk gains from their sophomore playmakers. After TreVeyon Henderson picked up 11 yards to start the series, Drake Maye found Efton Chism on an acrobatic 17-yard pickup over the middle of the field. The team continued its march toward the Raiders end zone thanks to a 4th-and-2 conversion from Maye to Douglas. Another rather curious DPI call on an incompletion intended for Romeo Doubs gave the team the ball at the Raiders 15. Another fourth-down conversion — on 4th-and-3 to Hunter Henry — put the team at the goal line, and two plays later Rhamondre Stevenson crossed the goal line from 5 yards out. The touchdown put the finishing touches on an 11-play, 84-yard series. | Patriots 14 : 7 Raiders

Coming off a touchdown drive, the Raiders went back to three-and-out territory on their third possession of the game. They would have avoided that fate if not for an offside penalty to erase a 3rd-and-1 conversion. The subsequent 3rd-and-5 saw Charles Woods record a pass breakup on the boundary to force a punt.
Second quarterA 14-yard Marcus Jones punt return set up the next Patriots drive, and the offense continued methodically marching down the field. However, it ran into trouble once on the Raiders side of the field. Both TreVeyon Henderson and Will Campbell suffered respective ankle and knee injuries that forced them to depart for the locker room, while the unit failed to convert a 3rd-and-6 on an incomplete Drake Maye pass that was penalized as intentional grounding.
The Patriots continued struggling covering Brock Bowers on the next drive, but their defense nonetheless came up big once the Raiders found themselves on their side of the field. A well-timed blitz forced an errant throw on first down, followed by Gabe Jacas stuffing a run on second down. Then, on 3rd-and-11, Milton Williams collapsed the pocket and Elijah Ponder was able to get down Kirk Cousins for a 4-yard sack. The subsequent punt traveled for a net of only 20 yards.
The Patriots’ next drive was a short one, and ended after only two plays. Third-string running back Corey Kinder, who entered the game for the injured TreVeyon Henderson, got the ball punched out by ex-Patriot Adam Butler on his first carry of the day, allowing the Raiders to take over at the New England 38-yard line.
Despite having to start in its own half of the field, the Patriots defense was able to keep the Raiders off the board. Free agency pickup Dre’Mont Jones was a big reason for that: the veteran snuffed out an end-around and brought wide receiver Tre Tucker down for a loss of 11 yards. Two plays later, another well-executed blitz call forced an incompletion, which in turn was followed by kicker Matt Gay sending a 49-yard field goal attempt to the left upright for his first miss of the season.
Two big Rhamondre Stevenson runs helped the Patriots return to the Raiders’ side of the 50 just before the half, and a tight end screen to Hunter Henry for 26 yards allowed them to set up shop at the Las Vegas 11. One play later, Drake Maye found the veteran tight end for a touchdown. | Patriots 21 : 7 Raiders

The Patriots defense delivered another big play to close out the first half. Elijah Ponder got to Kirk Cousins for a second time, strip-sacking the quarterback. The ball was recovered by Las Vegas to end the quarter.
Third quarterDrake Maye and company started the second half with back-to-back 13-yard gains by Eli Raridon and Efton Chism, and with Kyle Williams drawing a 17-yard defensive pass interference. The second-year wideout was then flagged for offensive pass interference, but made up for it two plays later by hauling in his first touchdown of the season — a perfectly-executed 34-yard strike down the left sideline. | Patriots 28 : 7 Raiders

Down three touchdowns, the Raiders responded with a rather uninspiring three-and-out: two short runs, followed by an incomplete pass on third down. That incompletion was forced by some pressure up front, and by Kindle Vildor — a recent promotion from the practice squad to the 53-man roster — being aggressive at the catch point and breaking up a pass intended for Brock Bowers.
The Patriots’ next drive was no better. Penalties on Marcus Jones’ punt return and the very first play from scrimmage backed the unit up, and it never got out of the hole before having to punt the ball back to the opponent. New England did come close to striking a big play on 2nd-and-16, but what looked like a toe-dragging sideline catch by DeMario Douglas was rightfully overturned by the replay assistant.
Las Vegas showed some life on its next drive. Sparked by an 18-yard punt return, Kirk Cousins found Brock Bowers for a gain of 27 yards to bring his team into field goal range. However, the defense picked up the pace at that point to limit the damage: a 3-yard tackle for loss by Charles Woods was followed by two incompletions to force a 46-yard Matt Gay field goal. | Patriots 28 : 10 Raiders
The Patriots offense returned to form on its next drive, and to the Raiders red zone. Drake Maye hit big plays to DeMario Douglas for 16 yards, Eli Raridon for 31 — the latter a perfectly-delivered hole shot from the QB — and Rhamondre Stevenson for 14 before taking the ball in himself: the reigning AFC Offensive Player of the Week scored a rushing touchdown from 3 yards out to extend New England’s lead. | Patriots 35 : 10 Raiders

New England’s defense continued putting the clamps on the Raiders offense on the next drive. After two short gains, a ferocious pass rush forced an incompletion and set up a 4th-and-3. Whie Kirk Cousins did connect with Brock Bowers for the conversion, Kevin Byard and Kindle Vildor forced a fumble that was recovered by Craig Woodson for New England’s first takeaway of the day.
Fourth quarterKyle Williams, have yourself a day. After already hauling in a 34-yard touchdown earlier in the third quarter, the second-year wide receiver caught a 49-yard deep ball from Drake Maye on the final play of the period. The sizable gain allowed New England to return to the Las Vegas red zone, where the series fizzled out with three straight plays that did not gain any yards. Still, an Andy Borregales 28-yard field goal allowed the Patriots to grow their lead to 28 points. | Patriots 38 : 10 Raiders
The Raiders were able to hit some big plays on their next drive, marching deep into New England territory on gains of 28 and 31 yards. The Patriots showed only slightly more resistance at that point, which allowed Las Vegas to score on a 2-yard Dylan Laube touchdown run. | Patriots 38 : 17 Raiders
