Warriors Owner Makes Much-Needed Statement on Steph Curry's Future

Over the course of the offseason, one of the biggest questions that the Golden State Warriors needed to address was franchise star guard Steph Curry's future with the team.

At 38-years-old, Curry's illustrious career is winding down and Curry was headed into the final season of his previous contract.

After a disappointing 2025-26 season, the Warriors were clearly feeling the pressure of needing to improve the team around Curry to better the chances of giving their star one last chance at a deep playoff run before his career came to an end.

Ultimately, the offseason wasn't as star-studded as the Warriors initially planned, but that seemingly didn't do much to dissuade Curry from staying with the team that drafted him nearly two decades ago and Curry ultimately secured his future with the team by signing a two-year, $116 million extension in late September.

Team-Friendly Extension

That deal, as massive as the payout may be, was still less than the max amount that Curry was eligible for, a move that gives the Warriors some freedom to continue building around him.

The assurance that Curry signing the extension gave the Warriors is huge, but according to owner Joe Lacob, he personally was never worried that Curry would seek out a team elsewhere ride out the end of his career.

“We were going to take care of him and make sure he stays, no matter what,” Lacob said (via the San Francisco Chronicle). “Most players don’t ever take less, and he didn’t have to... if he had demanded to take all of it, we’d have paid it. He deserves it… The most important thing is he stays a Warrior for life, because he’s so important to this franchise.”

Lacob's own awareness about the benefit of Curry taking less is telling, and he even joked in that same interview that the team could do even more if Curry had agreed to take even less. Still, Lacob made it clear that paying Curry back for everything he's helped the franchise accomplish, four NBA championships included, was a high priority.

It's difficult to imagine a Warriors team without Curry leading the way, harder to imagine still the idea of Curry ever donning another team's uniform during his playing career.

His newest extension doesn't guarantee that he'll retire as a Warrior, he's remained productive through the later years of his career and could feasibly continue playing into his 40s, but it goes a long way in making the idea that he'll spend his entire career with the Warriors possible.

Lacob's confidence is only natural considering the importance of Curry to the Warriors and even if times have been hard for the team as of late and the upcoming season looks to still be difficult considering how difficult the Western Conference is as a whole, the one thing that that will never be in doubt about the Warriors is their commitment to Curry.
