Buffalo Stampede: Bills Trample the Los Angeles Rams on the Road
“It’s been a while since I’ve been this pissed after a game,” Rams head coach McVay said after the game. “In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal, not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight.”
The Rams’ special teams was a problem from the opening kickoff. The Bills returned the opening kickoff for 70 yards which they converted into a field goal. The special teams’ struggles continued throughout the game with kicker Harrison Mevis missing a 50-yard field goal. Mevis also had the game leading 48-yard field goal blocked in overtime.
The Rams have had one of the worst special teams under McVay. Los Angeles hired Bubba Ventrone from the Cleveland Browns during the offseason to address these issues, but the struggles have continued. McVay said he plans to evaluate his kicking unit.
Buffalo’s Success
Buffalo’s offense was unstoppable Monday night. Bills superstar quarterback Josh Allen finished the game with 12 completions on 19 attempts for 210 passing yards. The Bills offensive gameplay was clear – run the ball. The Rams’ defense, ranked second in the pass game, didn’t have a significant impact on the game.
Allen finished the game with 10 carries for 121 rushing yards and a touchdown – the second most rushing yards in his career. The Bills also gave their star running back James Cook, 25 carries which he turned into 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Allen has been known to be reckless, but Bills head coach Joe Brady made it apparent, he wasn’t going to put the ball in harm’s way. Allen has been known to turn the ball over but used his legs to move the ball throughout the whole game. His only mistake came late in the second quarter on an interception to Jaylen Watson.
Rams’ Bright Spots in Defeat

Offensively, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford delivered an elite performance, throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns. Stafford took advantage of Buffalo’s poor pass defense finding his two star receivers throughout the game. Puka Nacua had another big game with 17 catches for 147 total yards and a touchdown. Davante Adams finished with five catches but two were red zone touchdowns.
The offense also saw a balanced backfield as Kyren Williams and Blake Corum combined for 148 total yards. Stafford also got the veteran tight end Tyler Higbee involved throughout with five catches for 83 yards – going to him during crucial downs.
Los Angeles’ defense wasn’t bad, despite Buffalo’s impressive offensive numbers. The Rams run defense is above average ranked 12th coming into the matchup, but they clearly weren’t ready for Allen and Buffalo’s run game.
Rams linebacker Nate Landman was the star of the show for the defense with two forced fumbles including one in overtime. Aaron Donald also almost came away with his first sack but it was taken away due to a penalty in the secondary.
The Last Word
After a highly anticipated matchup between the last two NFL MVPs, the Rams staff is mostly to blame. After last season, the special teams issues have yet to be resolved
After a tough win against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, the Rams hoped to beat the Bills. However, the 70-yard return set the tone for the Bills early and while their defense hasn’t been great, the Rams must find a way to address their recurring special teams problems.
Following last season’s struggles, the expectation was that hiring Ventrone would resolve the special teams problems, but it seems to be deeper than that. If the Rams want another successful season, they need to fix their special teams.
