Bernard has quickly earned more opportunities in Pittsburgh, but earning Rodgers’ trust requires far more than simply making plays on Sundays. The rookie receiver is being tested throughout the week, with Rodgers making sure he is completely prepared for whatever the defense might throw at the Steelers.

Rodgers puts Bernard through weekly interrogations

The rookie said Rodgers will suddenly call on him and begin firing questions about the upcoming opponent.
“He interrogates me every single week,” Bernard said.
According to Bernard, Rodgers will ask him to identify players on the opposing defense, explain the defensive scheme, and recall specific plays from Pittsburgh’s game plan. The report is that Rodgers regularly challenges Bernard on coverage identification, defensive tendencies, and hand signals.
That level of preparation is exactly what Rodgers expects from the players around him. Bernard acknowledged that talent alone is not enough to succeed at the highest level.
“Aaron Rodgers challenges me all the time,” Bernard told NFL.com. “That’s how you become one of the best — the ball knowledge.”
For a rookie, that can be a daunting responsibility. Bernard entered the season needing to learn an NFL offense while also developing chemistry with a quarterback who has spent more than two decades mastering the position.

Bernard is turning the pressure into production

Bernard received his first major opportunity against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 and responded with six receptions for 80 yards on nine targets, all career highs.
One of the most impressive aspects of that performance was how Rodgers continued trusting Bernard after the rookie dropped an early pass. Rather than moving away from him, Rodgers continued targeting Bernard throughout the game, including on important third downs and a 25-yard reception on a scramble drill.
That trust could become increasingly important for Pittsburgh. The Steelers are dealing with injuries at wide receiver, with Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve and Roman Wilson also dealing with an injury.
Bernard now appears ready for a larger role, and Rodgers’ demanding approach may be helping accelerate his development.
For all the difficulty that comes with playing alongside a quarterback like Rodgers, Bernard clearly understands the bigger picture. The weekly interrogations are not simply about putting pressure on a rookie. They are designed to make sure Bernard knows exactly what he is doing when Sunday arrives.
