The New York Mets have plenty of work to do this offseason after a disappointing campaign, and rebuilding their starting rotation figures to be among their biggest priorities.

With uncertainty surrounding the team’s pitching depth after a tumultuous season, the front office will have to decide which arms can be trusted to help the club return to contention next season. But as the team considers its options, it seems pretty clear the Mets will have to bring in some new starters if it wants to contend for a World Series next year.

“Reading between the lines, the Mets might view their starting rotation like this heading into the offseason: Nolan McLean is a lock, and Christian Scott should be close to a lock. Beyond that, things are up in the air,” Danny Abriano noted for SNY. “No matter what, the plan should be to add two legitimate rotation pieces this offseason.”

As the Mets consider their options, one of their former starters has made an announcement about the future of his career that seems to rule out a return to Queens.

New York Mets Get Free Agency Update From Tampa Bay Rays Star Freddy Peralta

The team had hoped to get a reliable rotation piece when it acquired Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers, but his performance in New York fell short of expectations before a trade-deadline move changed the trajectory of his season.

Now, after rediscovering his form with the Tampa Bay Rays, Peralta has made a significant declaration about his hopes for the future.

“I’m very comfortable here and I would love to stay here for the rest of my career,” Peralta told Foul Territory on Thursday. “I think they are very smart, they know what they’re doing.”

Peralta’s interest in staying with the Rays is understandable, given just how dramatically his performance has improved since joining them. Peralta’s resurgence, which included an American League Championship Series MVP Award, has now put him back on track to land a nine-figure contract wherever he signs before next season.

“Peralta, 30, posted a 3.79 ERA across eight seasons with Milwaukee, including a career-best 2.70 ERA in 2025 that landed him in fifth place in the NL Cy Young race. The Mets acquired him hoping he could replicate that success, but he instead allowed more hits than innings pitched and saw his strikeouts per nine innings dip from 11.1 in 2025 to 8.9 with the team,” according to the New York Post’s Matt Ehalt. “Tampa Bay took a shot on Peralta at the deadline in its quest to hold off the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL East and got to work on helping him return to his old self.”

Tampa Bay Rays Star Freddy Peralta Sends Free Agency After New York Mets Exit

Peralta’s career declaration gives the Rays a meaningful opening as they consider whether to pursue a longer-term agreement with the right-hander. And his praise for the Rays intelligence might stem from his disappointing setback while with the Mets.

For the Mets, Peralta’s turnaround is another reminder of the challenge facing their offseason decision-makers. They must not only find dependable starting pitching on the open market, but should be asking themselves what they did to contribute to Peralta’s struggles.
