Junior Caminero exits Game 4 of the World Series with apparent injury

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero exited Game 4 of the World Series with an apparent injury.

The Rays were trailing the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 when Caminero led off the bottom of the 12th inning in St. Petersburg, Florida with a routine ground ball to the left side of the infield. He reached base when the throw from third baseman Joey Ortiz short-hopped first baseman Jake Bauers.

Caminero was safe at first on the error by Ortiz, but he pulled up limping.

Although he managed to stay in the game initially — and even advance from first to third base on a single by Liam Hicks — Caminero was soon replaced by a pinch runner, Cedric Mullins.

Mullins scored on a single by Jonny DeLuca to tie the game 3-3, a run that proved to be a critical turning point in the series.

Tampa Bay won in walk-off fashion thanks to back-to-back singles by Chandler Simpson and Ben Williamson. The latter scored Nick Fortes with the game-winning run in a season-saving 4-3 win for Tampa Bay.

The Rays’ first victory of the series ended Milwaukee’s nine-game postseason winning streak, and forced a Game 5 on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Brewers reliever Shane Drohan faced four batters to end the game, and all four singled.

The Brewers took the lead, 3-2, on a solo home run by Cooper Pratt in the top of the 12th inning. That was the first run for either team since the fifth inning, and it put Milwaukee one inning away from the first championship in franchise history.

The Rays made sure to give the home fans at Tropicana Field at least one reason to celebrate before the season was over — thanks in large part to Caminero’s hustle and persistence.
