Exhausting 3-2 win in last 16 at SW Bregenz
Our boys made life difficult for themselves in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup on the shores of Lake Constance by being wasteful with a host of scoring opportunities. Nevertheless, they managed to win 3-2 against a spirited Bregenz side to enter the draw for the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Match summary
2' – Fast start
Less than two minutes in, our attacking players showed exactly what they had in mind. Edmund Baidoo played a through ball to Karim Konate, who danced past goalkeeper Aizawa before slotting the ball inside the far corner (2').
12' & 23' – further chances
Danny Röhl’s side maintained their momentum. Konate came agonisingly close to a second goal, while a header from left-winger Yorbe Vertessen - set up brilliantly by Stevie Lainer - was denied only by the goalpost.
33' – pegged back
An old football adage proved to be true as Omotehara appeared up front, connected with a cross from the right, and scored a surprise equaliser (33').We restored the lead before the break though as Vertessen latched onto a quickly taken free-kick from Krätzig - catching the Bregenz defence in a state of disorder - and fired a shot from 16 yards out inside the near post.
Restart & 57' – Lazio slayer shocks Bregenz
There was no real change in the second period. Our side created high-quality chances almost by the minute. The best of these fell to Baidoo - who narrowly missed the target following a slip-up by Aizawa - and Lainer, who arrived just a fraction too late at the far post to tap the ball in. Our full-back showed his threat in the air again today as Mazurek delivered the cross, and Lainer capitalised to make it 3-1 on his return to the starting XI (57').
59' & final phase – tenser than required
The Black and Whites battled back - with Cecchini Muller poking the ball over the line following a corner (59') - and our boys continued to lack a clinical edge in front of goal, meaning the final stages turned into a genuine cup thriller.
Look ahead
Bregenz's late efforts proved fruitless, and at the end of an eventful evening, we have secured our place in the quarter-finals of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. The draw for the quarter-finals will take place this coming Sunday on ORF 1, following the Vienna Derby (approx. 19:00 CET). The matches will be played on February 9, 10, or 11.

I have to be a bit critical today. After 30 minutes, we should have been 4-0 or 5-0 up - that would have put the game to bed. We had three or four clear-cut chances in the second half, too. In truth, it could have ended 10-2. But that’s football for you - we ended up turning a comfortable game into a real cup battle. Our chance conversion rate was questionable today, and we need to improve in that area. At the end of the day, it’s the cup - we’ve advanced, and by tomorrow, no one will be asking how we did it, even though we do hold ourselves to certain standards.

We are very happy to have come out on top. We made things unnecessarily difficult for ourselves. Especially in the first half, we had good opportunities to secure our progression earlier. We knew it would be a real battle - and that’s exactly what it turned out to be. Personally, it’s a huge boost - for my state of mind and my heart - to have played a significant part in the win. Ultimately, we managed to get the win over the line, which speaks volumes about us and the team’s morale!
