Gavi is growing frustrated with his situation at Barcelona, with the midfielder feeling that Hansi Flick has not been fair in the opportunities he has received this season.
According to information from Alfredo Martinez, the 22-year-old is disappointed with his reduced role, which is becoming difficult to understand given his strong relationship with the German coach.
The latest incident came during Barcelona’s victory over Alaves, when Gavi was expected to receive some playing time but remained on the bench throughout the match.
Flick introduced several other players, including Marc Bernal, Alejandro Balde, Gabriel Jesus, Anthony Gordon and Gerard Martin, without turning to the Spanish midfielder.
Gavi struggles to earn opportunities under Flick
The decision against Alaves showed Gavi’s difficult campaign so far.
He has accumulated just 191 minutes across seven appearances in the 2026/27 season, starting only twice.

Among the Barcelona squad, only Alejandro Balde, Frenkie de Jong, Brian Farinas and Hamza Abdelkarim have registered fewer minutes.
For a player who has previously been an important part of Barcelona’s midfield, such limited involvement is a significant change.
Gavi has even struggled to establish himself in Flick’s rotation, with the manager relying on other options when making changes during matches.
The midfielder’s frustration is understood to come not only from a lack of starts but also from the feeling that he has not been given a fair opportunity to demonstrate his value.
Rodri’s arrival has increased midfield competition
Barcelona’s midfield dynamics have changed considerably following Rodri’s arrival last summer.
The Spanish international has added an established option to a department that already includes Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal and Fermin Lopez.

Although his ability to operate in different midfield roles gives Flick tactical flexibility, the Barcelona fan-favourite has so far struggled to translate that versatility into consistent involvement.
Positive relationship with Flick faces growing pressure
What makes the situation difficult to understand is the previously strong relationship between Gavi and Flick.
The pair have repeatedly spoken positively about each other, with the German coach having shown considerable appreciation for the midfielder’s qualities.
However, that relationship is now being tested by the difference between Gavi’s expectations and his actual role.
Notably, similar concerns have also emerged around Alejandro Balde, suggesting that managing the expectations of players receiving fewer opportunities could become an important issue for Flick.
