After being waived by the Portland Trail Blazers ahead of the 2026-27 season, the former Spurs first-round pick is looking to build on his experience rather than focus on another unexpected departure.
Speaking during Texas Legends media day, Sochan reflected on his brief stint in Portland and explained why he remains optimistic about his basketball future.
"I could look at it negatively, the Portland situation. But when I look back at that situation, I think the two months I was there, I grew a lot," Sochan said.
The 23-year-old forward signed a one-year deal with Portland during the offseason but was released despite what he described as a productive preseason.
Sochan said he remained healthy throughout training camp and made the most of his opportunities on the court.

"I was healthy throughout the whole training camp, preseason and open gym. So I think that was a blessing," Sochan said. "When we got into preseason games, the minutes I got I think I used them to the best of my ability. I had good games."
Rather than allowing the setback to derail his progress, Sochan said he is focused on maintaining his momentum.
"So, why would I hold weight on something that I can't control?" Sochan said. "And instead, be in this moment and do what I can do and keep that momentum going."
Sochan's next opportunity will come with the Texas Legends, the Dallas Mavericks' NBA G League affiliate, which selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 G League Draft.
The Legends are preparing for the G League season, which begins Friday, Nov. 6.
Selected ninth overall by San Antonio in the 2022 NBA Draft, Sochan spent most of his NBA career with the Spurs before splitting the 2025-26 season between San Antonio and the New York Knicks. With the Knicks, he won a championship as they defeated the Spurs in last season's NBA Finals.
He has averaged 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his NBA career.
Now, Sochan hopes his latest stop in Texas can help him work his way back to the NBA.
