Ahead of the 2018-19 season, the shot clock rule was changed to reset to 14 seconds in offensive rebounding situations, as opposed to 24. The shorter reset time eliminates a team’s ability to stall and speeds up the game. According to Condevaux, another factor that might be contributing to this uptick in injuries is that being an NBA player has become a 365-day-a-year job. After their seasons end, players might take a week off, two tops, and they’re back doing skill work. And skill work is very repetitive. In a pickup game, you may cut right, you may cut left, but when you’re doing skill work, you’re doing the same movement repeatedly, and you’re loading the tissues. But Condevaux went a step further into something I’ve long wondered about — the impact of young athletes specializing in a sport at an early age. In prior eras, basketball was only a portion of athletes’ time. They often spread their skills across multiple sports, developing other areas of their game and their bodies. That’s no longer the case.
