Sean Wesolek cements his place in the Hope post, following 'older brothers'

HOLLAND - The Hope College men's basketball team has a good blend in the post.

Orion Yant is long and lanky, Kyle Blauch is big and strong, then off the bench, Sean Wesolek is in between - and can shoot.

Wesolek, a sophomore center, saw time last season, but will be relied upon for much more.

He had the best game of his career in Hope's 90-63 season opening win over Anderson (Ind.) on Friday, Nov. 6, at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Wesolek totaled 10 points and grabbed three rebounds in 13 key minutes off the bench.

"He is a good combination of the two. It is huge because he gets rewarded for doing things the right way," Hope coach Greg Mitchell said. "All he wanted to do last year was learn. He hung out with Kyle and Orion and just soaked it all up. His attitude and charisma allow him to find his potential. He will be ready every game because he has so much respect for the guys before him, which is really cool."

The 6-foot, 6-inch Bay City native scored four baskets in the paint and nailed a 3-pointer that keyed a run to put the Flying Dutch up double digits - something they didn't relinquish.

"I definitely tried to get bigger this offseason. I gained 15 pounds. But I have two bigs in front of me that support me. When I do well, I feel more loved on than anybody," Wesolek said. "That is the difference between Hope and other places. We have guys who will love and support you no matter what."

The post trio helped Hope grab 58 rebounds - 29 more than Anderson. Blauch had 13, including five on the offensive end. Yant had nine to go along with 14 points and two blocks.

"It is so fun. We are like three brothers. I like to think of them as my older brothers. They took me in last year and it has been great," said Wesolek, whose older sister was an NCAA qualifier and captain for Hope swimming. "Our dynamic has been great. We each do different things well, and I think it is really unique to have that in a post."

The guards played well for Hope, too, as Brandon Cargill totaled 20 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Avery Sanchez had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.

"We played really hard. It wasn't super clean. But we rebounded the heck our of it. Our biggest concern is if we are able to rebound. These guys listened," Mitchell said. "We are deep and we play hard. It is a really cohesive group … and we have to keep it rolling. We don't have any seniors but these guys have some big dreams and we have prove it every night."
