I know Spartan Nation is still basking in the glow of last night’s football victory. Today, we had more teams playing in big games. Both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams had Big Ten Tournament games today. The earlier game was the men’s quarterfinal matchup against Maryland, where the Spartans were the 4-seed and the Terrapins were the 5-seed. An hour later, the women, also seeded 4th, had a semifinal against 8-seed um.

The Men’s Team ended up falling in their game, losing 2-1. Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute and then doubled the advantage early in the 2nd half to take control. The Spartans only cracked the scoreboard in the 88th minute but were unable to get an equalizer before the buzzer. Now they will have to wait to see if they earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be on November 16.

The Women’s Team had a better result than the men, and for the second straight day, the Spartans beat the wolverines. The game’s lone goal came on a free kick in the 40th minute from just outside the box. Defensewoman Renee Watson took the kick and bent it just over the wall of defenders and into the back of the net before um’s goalie could dive for it.

The Lady Spartans will play for the Big Ten Championship on Friday against the winner of the Purdue/Wisconsin semifinal. If Wisconsin wins, the final will be in East Lansing, but Purdue will host the championship game if they take down the Badgers.
