Newcastle will take on Manchester City for the fifth time this season this weekend, and Howe said Woltemade should be available for the game.

“Nick should be okay,” he said. “He had an illness and lost a bit of weight. He didn’t eat for a few days. We needed to be smart with him but he trained individually yesterday and felt ok so that’s a positive.”

Miley has not played since January 28th and is dealing with a knee issue, and Howe said he still needs some time: “Lewis isn’t there yet but he’s not too far away. I don’t think he’ll make the next couple of games.”

Newcastle have lost three of their games against City this season, but Howe said there was reason to be optimistic: “The games against them have all been close. We’ve been in every game and had chances against them. We haven’t been as clinical as we’ve needed to be to win those games.

“Defensively we need to watertight. They are always going to test you. They are such a difficult team to pin down in every moment. No doubt it will be a proper English FA Cup tie. End-to-end which will suit us, get the crowd involved which will suit us.

“City have been the most consistent team for a long period of time. They find new ways to evolve and change. They’re flexible with what they do. In my experience against them you have to try and have a good plan, your players have to be at their very best and you need a bit of luck.”

Full-back Livramento has been out since the start of January with a hamstring injury, and the Newcastle manager had a very encouraging update on his recovery.

“He’s getting there,” he said. “Let’s wait and see. He hasn’t trained with us yet but we’re hoping he will very soon. He’s done a lot of work so there’s no question of his fitness in the sense of his cardiovascular fitness will be really high.

“He’s been running for a long time and has a lot of work behind him. It’s just the training time and the involvement with us (which he needs). He’s looked really good. I think he’s there or thereabouts.”
