Alan Roden's Spring Training Signals Development Progress Despite Minnesota Twins' Roster Move

· Yahoo Sports

The Minnesota Twins have had a few young standouts in spring training this season, including second baseman Luke Keaschall, right fielder Matt Wallner, and left fielder Alan Roden. However, they optioned the latter player to Triple-A on Monday, per their social media.

Roden slashed .302/.362/.395 with one homer and seven RBIs over 17 games this spring. The 26-year-old bounced back after slashing .191/.261/.294 with two homers and nine RBIs over 55 games in the regular season last year.

Roden was taken in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays before making their Opening Day roster in 2025. They then traded the Wisconsin native to the Twins on July 31, and he slashed just .158/.200/.263 with one homer and one RBI across 12 games after the deal.

Roden's 2026 spring training wasn't the first time he had success professionally. The 5-foot-11, 215-pounder owns a slash line of .302/.409/.457 with 30 homers, 107 RBIs, and 47 stolen bases over 297 career minor-league games. He also logged a .916 OPS over 71 Triple-A games in 2024 and a .919 OPS in 32 Triple-A games last season.

Additionally, Roden was Toronto's fifth-ranked prospect last year, per MLB Pipeline. Given that the organization wanted to compete for a title that season, it leveraged his minor-league momentum to get established big-leaguers.

The Blue Jays got relief pitcher Louis Varland and first baseman Ty France in exchange for Roden and left-handed pitcher Kendry Rojas in the trade, who was their 10th-ranked prospect in 2025. Varland has 112 regular-season appearances in MLB and pitched 16 playoff innings for Toronto last season, while France has a .736 OPS over 839 career games and played 37 contests for Toronto after the deal.

The Blue Jays got within one win of a championship, while the Twins missed the playoffs for the second straight season. However, Minnesota can become an upper-echelon team in the AL if its young players like Roden develop into productive big-leaguers. Last season's trade was a long-term move, and his spring training success is a sign of the investment paying off.

For now, Minnesota will rely on James Outman, Byron Buxton, and Wallner to man the outfield, with Austin Martin and designated hitter Trevor Larnach as backups. If any of those players struggle and/or get hurt, that could open a roster spot for Roden. Buxton is a star and won't get sent down to the minors for performance, but it's a plausible scenario for the others.

Up next for the Twins is a spring training game against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday before Opening Day against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
