A notable Broncos contract extension is likely on the way

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton is entering the final year of his contract, and coach Sean Payton has publicly campaigned for the GM to get an extension.

Speaking with KUSA-TV's Mike Klis at the NFL's annual league meeting in Arizona earlier this week, Paton was asked about a potential contract extension.

“We’ll get there,’’ Paton told Klis. “We leave here Tuesday, draft meetings Wednesday. Then the draft and the offseason. Love it here. Love the ownership. Sean (Payton). We’ve got one of the best coaches in the league, best ownership. We have a really good team. So I’m happy to be here.”

A potential extension seems to be a matter of when, not if. During his media availability in Arizona, Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner reiterated that he wants to keep the GM in Denver.

“I’ve said the same thing [before]: We want to have George here long term," Penner said. "He’s been a terrific partner for Sean [Payton] and how they work together. I’m sure we’ll get that sorted out.”

So, an extension is likely on the way. The Broncos (particularly Paton) are currently busy preparing for the NFL draft (April 23-25), so it wouldn't be surprising to see an extension get done later this offseason, perhaps as soon as May. It might still be a few months away, but Paton seems likely to get another contract in Denver.
