Minnesota Twins' Byron Buxton Trade Deadline Decision is Becoming Obvious

The Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers played on Monday night. While Minnesota has endured ups and downs throughout the 2026 season, Byron Buxton has swung the bat well. On Monday, Buxton hit a home run for the sixth time in his past nine games. He is clearly seeing the ball well at the moment.

The Twins star now has 23 home runs this season. His OPS sits at .945 as of this story's writing. The Twins, however, are under .500 and have struggled for the most part.

Sure, they play in a winnable American League Central. The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians are ahead of the Twins in the division. Minnesota could attempt to compete, but the chances of this Twins ball club making any serious noise in the postseason are slim. 

Rebuilding is the best option for the team. While the idea of trading Buxton will obviously not excite fans, the fact of the matter is that Buxton is playing at an MVP-caliber level and the Twins could get an especially valuable return for him right now.

Twins Need to Consider Making Byron Buxton Trade

It seemed as if Buxton and Joe Ryan were going to be legitimate trade candidates this past offseason. A report later surfaced that suggested Minnesota would not be moving its stars during the offseason, though. The ball club seemingly believed they could compete.

Fast-forward to June of 2026, and the Twins are under .500 and struggling overall in a rather weak division. Trading Buxton -- as well as Ryan -- would make sense.

The difference is that Buxton is under contract through 2028. Minnesota may not be in a rush to trade him. Ryan, meanwhile, has a mutual option on his contract for 2027. There is more pressure to trade him to avoid potentially losing him in free agency for almost nothing in return. 

So, why can't the Twins just wait until next season or even the offseason to trade Buxton? Well, Buxton is currently playing some of the best baseball of his career. He is also 32 years old. Minnesota needs to capitalize on his trade value right now. There is surely no shortage of contenders around the MLB world that would have interest in surrendering a promising package of prospects in a trade for a superstar like Byron Buxton.

It is becoming obvious that trading Byron Buxton this season is the best possible move for the Twins.
