The biggest story of the college football offseason could not only impact the NFL, but specifically the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

The Brendan Sorsby saga reached its conclusion. The Texas Tech quarterback who had admitted to various gambling infractions, will be entering the NFL supplemental draft.
Although a judge allowed Sorsby the opportunity to play college football in 2026, Sorsby chose to start his journey to the National Football League at bit earlier as expected.
For teams that don’t have a stable quarterback situation, this is intriguing news.
Putting aside all the questions surrounding Sorsby, of which there are plenty, the guy is quite talented. Last season at Cincinnati, Sorsby ended the year with 27 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 61.6 completion percentage.
Had he declared for this year’s NFL Draft, he may have gone in the first round.
Instead, he entered the transfer portal, signed with Tech and then, right around draft time, Sorsby’s world turned upside down.
So how does any of this impact the Buccaneers?
Whether or not the Bucs have a stable QB situation beyond 2026 depends on Baker Mayfield’s contract. The veteran QB is on the last year of his four-year deal with Tampa, and as of the beginning of the month, the sides aren’t close to resolving the situation.
Should Mayfield and the Bucs not reach a resolution, things will get interesting.
But even if Mayfield is with the Bucs longterm, it might make sense for the team to think about the future.
Mayfield is 31, and due to his fearless style of play that has admittedly made his head coach nervous, he isn’t a young 31 as far as playing in the NFL is concerned.
Even if Mayfield is in Tampa for the next five years, how good will he be at 34? 35? 36. It’s a fair question to ask.
If the Buccaneers are to take a shot on Sorsby, the common thought is that it would happen in the NFL’s Supplemental Draft.
The Supplemental Draft is held by the league in the summer for people that planned on playing college football as of April, but has their circumstances change.
That certainly describes Sorsby.
The thing about the Supplemental Draft is that it, uh, doesn’t always happen. In fact, it hasn’t happened since 2023.
No player has been selected since 2019, but this is because the draft only takes place when approved players are available.
Sorsby has applied for entry but hasn’t yet been approved.
If he is approved, the Buccaneers will be in the middle of the pecking order.
Teams that won six or fewer games last year will have first dibs, which doesn’t apply for the Bucs since they went 8-9 in 2025.
Teams that missed the playoffs are next, which does apply to the Bucs, and the playoff teams will be last in line.
Behind Mayfield, the Bucs’ QB room consists of Jake Browning (17 NFL starts), Connor Bazelak (zero starts) and Jalon Daniels (rookie UDFA).
