Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher Braxton Ashcraft has been a key part of the success this season.

The former second-round pick is in his second season in the MLB and has continued to show he’s a long-term part of this rotation. Ashcraft is 7-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 16 starts this season and veteran slugger Ryan O’Hearn has been impressed with his stuff this year.

“He’s been great,” O’Hearn said. “I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s throwing a lot of strikes. He’s got great stuff. Feels like he gives us a great chance to win every time he pitches.”

Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez, meanwhile, believes that Ashcraft being ready to throw as soon as he can, which is with eight seconds on the pitch clock, he does can throw hitters off.

“I love that (stuff),” Rodriguez said. “It makes hitters uncomfortable. He has to keep doing it until somebody says something.”

Amid Ashcraft’s stellar start, his name has been brought up as a potential All-Star, and he said it’s something that is on his mind.

“It’s hard not to think about it,” Ashcraft said. “The opportunity to showcase who you are as a player and a person, to get recognized by your peers, guys would be remiss to say they don’t think about it at all. But it’s outside of my control. I’m at peace with the idea that there’s nothing else I can do other than put a good brand of baseball on the field.”

Ashcraft will make his next start on Monday in the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
