Cardinals History By The Numbers
One hundred years ago, in 1926, a local athlete was doing all he could to set a national record at the University of Louisville, but it didn’t start out that way. The Male High School star had the guts, the skill, and the speed, but was a bit undersized for football as a freshman. Like most things in his life, this only served to motivate him more.

If you’re not familiar with Hall Of Fame athlete Fred Koster, today is the day to do it. The multi-sport star lettered for Louisville 16 (sixteen!) times playing four years on the basketball team, baseball team, football team, and running track. As a Junior, after adding some weight, he started the season for the football team as a tailback and specialist and in the first two games of the year accounted for 68 total points, a record at the time, and jumped started a season which had Koster finishing second overall nationally in points scored. Fred went on to play professional baseball and even spent a stint with the Phillies, with the majority of his career being in the minor leagues. The man co-founded Swope Auto Group, was a referee in the SEC, and did tons of other ‘Forest Gump’ like excursions in his lifetime. Read up on Koster here, as the ‘Society For American Baseball Research’ has a great piece on his life and career. A Cardinals Legend.
