That news might've caught some off guard on Wednesday, given that Ersson began June with the Philadelphia Flyers and then during the month was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

But on July 1, he inked a contract with Ottawa.

Here's how.

How did Senators get Samuel Ersson?

The Sens traded a fifth-round pick in late June to the Leafs to get Ersson's rights.

He was a restricted free agent, but they wanted a chance to negotiate.

In the end, it worked out. They'll keep Ersson around.

The Maple Leafs never intended to keep Ersson after getting him in the Joseph Woll trade, so this isn't a bad outcome for Toronto by any means.

This isn't a sure thing for Ottawa, either.

Ersson had just an 87.0 save percentage in 2025-26 and hasn't proven to be much better than that so far at the highest level.

But they're giving him a shot, and Canadian hockey fans will wait to see how these moving parts work out.
