Few players are better qualified to evaluate England’s greatest strikers than Alan Shearer. Before Harry Kane broke his scoring record, Shearer stood alone as England’s most prolific modern goalscorer. Now, the Newcastle United legend believes there is no longer any debate over who sits atop the list.

Shearer declared that Kane has cemented himself as England’s greatest-ever striker following another outstanding World Cup performance.

“I would say Harry Kane is England’s best ever striker. You have to say that. I know the arguments will be Bobby Charlton and all of that, and I totally get it and understand that. But yeah, Harry’s goals record and the standard that he’s set, he’s a proper goal scorer, a proper centre forward and has produced for England in big moments,” Shearer told Betfair.

That praise carries extra weight coming from Shearer, whose 30 England goals once ranked among the nation’s best before Kane surpassed him to become the Three Lions’ all-time leading scorer.

For Shearer, Kane’s greatness is about far more than the numbers. It is about consistently delivering when England needs him most. The Bayern Munich striker once again demonstrated that quality with a match-winning brace in England’s Round of 32 victory over DR Congo, keeping Thomas Tuchel’s side alive in its pursuit of World Cup glory.

Shearer was especially captivated by Kane’s second goal, calling it one of the finest examples of center-forward play he has seen.

“Hopefully, those big moments are not going to be the last ones because I said pre-tournament, if England are going to go far, Harry’s going to have to be in and around the Golden Boot and he is. Those two goals the other night just perfectly summed him up,” Shearer said. “The second one was a thing of beauty. Just the way he bought himself time, moved it into the space, didn’t even have to look because he knew exactly where he was. I think it was just classic, brilliant centre-forward play. Everything about it was just first class. It was amazing to be there, amazing to see it. I’ve tried to do that, and I’ve looked at what he sort of did, and the way he swivels and everything else. It was just, as I said, a thing of beauty to be there and see him do it.”

Coming from one of England’s greatest finishers, the compliment is significant. Shearer knows exactly how difficult that type of goal is to score because he built a Hall of Fame career doing it himself.
