Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming mutually agreed to part ways on Monday, July 13, 2026, ending an 18-year association.

Fleming first joined CSK as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking charge as head coach in 2009. Over the next 17 seasons, he transformed the Super Kings, along with captain MS Dhoni, into one of the most consistent teams in IPL before the franchise expanded to other T20 leagues around the world.

In his farewell message, Fleming said: "Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved."

"Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come," he added.

While his departure ends a chapter in one of cricket's longest coach-franchise partnerships, it also leaves behind a decorated trophy cabinet.

Every trophy won by the Super Kings franchise under Stephen Fleming

The Super Kings franchise under Fleming won all their trophies - a total of seven titles, only with CSK including five IPL trophies and two Champions League T20 (CLT20).

After falling short in the first two IPL seasons, CSK claimed their maiden title in 2010 by defeating the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the final. That kicked off the beginning of an IPL dynasty that dominated the league for over a decade.

Just months after lifting the IPL trophy, Chennai added the Champions League Twenty20 title, comfortably beating the South African side, the Warriors.

In IPL 2011, CSK became the first team to successfully defend the IPL title and win back-to-back IPL trophies, defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final.

It took Fleming and CSK three years to claim their next trophy, with their second CLT20 in 2014. They beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to become the first team to win two Champions League T20 titles.

CSK was later banned for two years in 2016 and 2017. Following CSK's suspension from the IPL, Fleming and Dhoni once again led the franchise to a fairytale title in their comeback season in 2018.

After finishing seventh in 2020, CSK bounced back to lift their fourth IPL trophy in 2021. Fleming's final IPL title came in 2023 when Chennai edged Gujarat Titans in one of the greatest IPL finals ever, claiming a fifth championship and drawing level with Mumbai Indians for the most IPL titles in history.

The following seasons, 2024, 2025, and 2026, saw the franchise miss the playoffs, which was one of the worst stretches in CSK's history.

At the same time, Fleming did not have major success guiding other Super Kings franchises outside CSK, including Texas Super Kings (TSK) in MLC and Jo'burg Super Kings (JSK) in SA20.

Fleming's CSK legacy was inseparable from Dhoni

Fleming's greatest achievement was not just winning trophies. He kept CSK relevant for nearly two decades. Through mega auctions and retirements, CSK reinvented itself without ever losing its identity.

Of course, no discussion about Fleming's legacy can ignore his commander-in-chief, Dhoni. CSK's success was built around Dhoni's genius captaincy on the field but behind closed doors, it was the trust and chemistry between captain and coach that became the franchise's greatest competitive advantage.

Could Fleming have achieved the same success without Dhoni? Could Dhoni have built this dynasty without Fleming? Those questions will remain hypothetical.

What isn't up for debate is that long after the trophies gather dust, the names "Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni" will remain inseparable in the story of CSK.
