The Royals have signed veteran lefty Aaron Bummer to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha. Bummer has appeared in 406 career MLB games with the White Sox and Braves with a 3.94 ERA. He was let go by Atlanta earlier this year after posting a 7.36 ERA in 19 games.

Bummer was originally drafted by the White Sox out of the University of Nebraska in 2014. He made the big leauges by 2017 and had his best season in 2019 when he posted a 2.13 ERA in 58 games. In 2020 he signed a five-year contract, but was traded to the Braves after a shaky season in 2023 in a six-player deal that involved Nicky Lopez. He rebounded in Atlanta, posting a 3.69 ERA in 98 games over 2024-25.
Bummer struggled with his control this year, walking 10 in 15.1 innings before his release in May. The Cubs signed him in June, but let him go after six weeks. Bummer relies heavily on a sinker/breaking ball combo, generally posting groundball rates around 60 percent.
The Royals have been actively signing veteran pitchers to provide depth after being hit with numerous injuries. In the last month the team has acquired veteran pitchers Scott Alexander, Scott Barlow, Jose Cuas, Randy Dobnak, Matt Moore, Connor Seabold, Justin Topa, and Vince Velasquez.
