Jason Robertson & Dallas Stars Agree On New Contract

It’s been one of the most hotly contested battles of the offseason. The Dallas Stars vs. their prized restricted free agent Jason Robertson. He had filed for arbitration after the two sides were at odds over a long-term extension. The Stars weren’t willing to go much above a $12 million AAV, but Robertson—a three-time 40-goal scorer—was looking for about $15 million per, from all accounts. Now the two sides have agreed on a one-year deal at $12 million, and he will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.

Robertson will be eligible to sign an extension as of Jan 1st, 2027.
The freshly minted 27-year-old racked up 45 goals and 96 points this past season, but with the two sides unable to work out an extension, the Stars attempted to trade him to the Seattle Kraken earlier this summer, in a sign-and-trade. But Robertson turned down the Kraken’s eight-year, $120 million ($15 million AAV) offer.
Why did Jason Robertson settle for one year, $12M from Dallas Stars?
In the end, the player takes a bit of a haircut for the present time, as his value has skyrocketed past the $12M mark after the events of this offseason thus far. Leo Carlsson’s $18M AAV offer sheet that was matched by the Anaheim Ducks, and Connor Bedard’s ensuing $15M AAV deal over five years with the Chicago Blackhawks are the noteworthy examples. As special and promising as those two young players are, Robertson is far more accomplished at this point. But as a full UFA next summer, and a salary cap that will have risen another $9.5 million higher, he hopes he’ll be able to ask for the moon (i.e. somewhere north of $18M, likely, if another 40-goal season is to come).
In the meantime, however, outspoken former NHLer Jordan Schmaltz, host of the popular Home by 3 podcast, feels that Robo is taking a big risk.

As for the Stars, they simply “kick the can down the road,” as Mark Lazerus noted in The Athletic. “Another season of Robertson’s pending free agency hanging over their heads, another summer of potentially contentious negotiation.”
But hey, in Dallas, a team that is always in ‘win-now’ mode, they’ve addressed the ‘now’, and can worry about the future, in the future. For the 2026-27 season, it’s winning time.
