Falcons QB battle deemed NFC South's biggest roster decision

The NFC South is about as wide open as it gets as we head towards the 2026 NFL season. The Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers both finished with the same record (8-9) as division champion Carolina, but Panthers won the title thanks to a tiebreaker.

Looking ahead, Atlanta is the most talented team in the NFC South this year and should be in the mix for the team's first division championship since 2016. There's still one very important piece of the puzzle missing for this roster, though.
If the Falcons could just find a competent and reliable starting quarterback, they'd be a real danger to conference contenders. The competition to decide who will start between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa has been named the biggest roster decision that will be made in training camp in the entire division, per Moe Moton at Bleacher Report.
"The Atlanta Falcons will host a quarterback battle between two lefties with extensive injury histories. Michael Penix Jr. is the 26-year-old incumbent with upside. After six seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa brings a wealth of experience, starting in 76 career games... Because of Penix's extended absence, Tagovailoa may win this battle by default. The last time we heard from Penix, he told reporters that he expected to be 100 percent for team drills at training camp. Despite appearing healthy in a recent workout video, the third-year quarterback has yet to be cleared for contact.
Tagovailoa is still just 28 years old, so he should in theory have a lot of good football ahead of him if he can bounce back from a bad couple of seasons with the Miami Dolphins. If he wins the QB competition this year, Tua would be at the front of the line to become Atlanta's new long-term franchise starter.
The same could be said for Penix, who needs to show more consistency and prove he can make it through a full 17-game season.
Falcons training camp kicks off on Wednesday, July 29, at the team's Flowery Branch facility.
