Instead of being clear sellers, the Red Sox now might be buying, with offensive upgrades a priority for this team with an elite rotation and bullpen. While there might not be a lot of great hitters available, some more creative options could come to fruition.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic proposed a trade idea for the Red Sox with the AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays that would send just one low-level prospect to Toronto for four-time All-Star designated hitter George Springer.

"George Springer to the Boston Red Sox for LHP Jojo Ingrassia (A+)," Bannon proposed. "... Ingrassia is Boston's 30th-ranked prospect and hasn't moved through the minors very fast after putting up a 1.85 ERA in Single-A in 2024."
This trade idea would be very interesting, as the Red Sox and Blue Jays linking up on a trade is not something that happens all that often.
But, from the Blue Jays' perspective, getting anything in return for Springer, who will hit free agency once the 2026 season comes to a close, would be a win.
Ingrassia wouldn't be a huge loss for the Red Sox, and adding Springer, who, as Bannon notes, "grew up a two-hour drive from Fenway Park," would be a fun storyline.

This season, the $150 million outfielder/DH has made all but one appearance at DH. But the four-time All-Star hasn't exactly been great at the plate.
In 276 at-bats this season, Springer has 10 home runs, 26 RBIs, a .225 batting average, and a .691 OPS. His 88 OPS+ is the lowest mark of his 13-year MLB career.
But the Red Sox could acquire him as their right-handed hitting platoon bat at the DH spot to split time with Masataka Yoshida. This season against left-handers, Springer is hitting .243 with a .778 OPS.
This trade idea is strictly hypothetical, and the hurdle of an intra-division trade will be a big one. But if the Red Sox could add Springer, it would be an intriguing addition as they try to hang onto a postseason spot after their July surge.
