The format for the AHSAA private school football playoffs are receiving some changes, AHSAA executive director Heath Harmon said.

After the AHSAA Central Board of Control meeting on Wednesday, July 29 at the AHSAA office in Montgomery, Harmon confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser that the AHSAA has added more teams to private school playoffs.
"Yes, so that was approved in an earlier meeting, but we did make some adjustments to our private school championships," Harmon said.
During a AHSAA Central Board of Control meeting on April 15, the CBOC approved the new playoff format for football in all classifications. In the original playoff format, Single A fielded four regions with the top four teams of each region advancing — making it a field of 16 teams.
Double A would send the top four teams from two regions to the postseason — making it a field of eight teams.
The changes were made after Harmon met with the private school advisory committee.
"Our private school advisory committee was actually formed after we had set classification, and so we did give them an opportunity to talk through some of the things that they thought would make it a better experience for them, and we did adjust accordingly," Harmon said.
Harmon didn't get into the specifics of what all the changes were, only that there were going to be more teams advancing to the first round of the playoffs.
"If you have only so many teams going into the playoffs and you limit the number of games that somebody has to play in, we didn't want to do that," Harmon said. "We still want to try to give them as many opportunities as possible. But what that ends up looking like is more teams advancing to the first round of the playoffs."
Harmon praised the advisory committee, and referenced the addition of teams in the playoffs as a good example of the AHSAA working with the private school committee.
