Rockies' Goodman Listed as Top Catcher at MLB Trade Deadline

As much as it probably pains Colorado Rockies fans to hear this, Hunter Goodman is a really hot commodity ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline on Aug. 3.

Goodman is even listed as the top catcher available at the trade deadline, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic.

Besides Goodman, other top MLB catchers on Bowden's list of tradeable assets include the now-injured Shea Langeliers of the Athletics (and he might be done for this season), Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles, Francisco Alvarez of the New York Mets, and Liam Hicks of the Miami Marlins.

To be fair, there have been other trade stories involving the Rockies that do not have Goodman's name listed. With the trade deadline moving closer, and more chatter grows around Goodman, it looks like he just might get dealt.

It looks like Rockies' 2026 season is a wash

If that does happen, then this 2026 season might (I said might) just be a wash.

Colorado president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes appear headstrong in building this franchise's assets according to their plan. That's a good thing, though, that they actually do have a plan.

The downside? Fans seeing Goodman, who truly is the power source for the Rockies' lineup, playing on a potential postseason team.

Bowden listed the Rockies among his "definite sellers" teams in the National League. Other NL teams he mentioned included the Mets and San Francisco Giants. That is not too surprising. 

As for more Rockies' trade deadline focus, Bowden said, "There just aren’t a lot of sellers, and most of them don’t have a lot to sell. The Rockies could deal their star catcher Hunter Goodman, but beyond that, they only have back-of-the-rotation and bullpen arms to deal."

Trade chatter gets louder for Goodman

Goodman is getting traction right now, just days away from Aug. 3. Like the old saying, "Where there's smoke, there's fire," the heat might be on DePodesta and Byrnes to get a haul of prospects for the Rockies' catcher.

Players like Mickey Moniak, Jake McCarthy, and Antonio Senzatela have also received attention from other MLB teams.

It will be a shame to see Goodman dealt away from the Rockies. He has done an incredible job in trying to keep a Rockies' pitching staff focused on having great outings. Combine his defensive prowess with a powerful bat and he does make a great addition for another team.

So, if DePodesta and Byrnes go through with a deal, they better make sure the return is good. Colorado fans don't want to see a bunch of lag arms get into the team's pitching plans. Of course, any trades made by them also open opportunities to bring up players from the minor leagues.

One of those minor leaguers who should get a call-up is Charlie Condon. Rockies fans follow what Condon is doing down at Triple-A Albuquerque. Seeing him for some at-bats might satisfy their tastes for September baseball.

Yet, for another season, Colorado is not involved in postseason conversations. That bites when referring to this proud franchise.
