One of Las Cruces High's best football players is going D-I.
Bulldawgs linebacker Denton Walter has verbally committed to New Mexico, according to a report confirmed by Sean Reider of the Albuquerque Journal. This comes after Walter confirmed on his X account that he received an offer from the Lobos on July 21 after a phone call with UNM coach Jason Eck. Walter has also confirmed it himself by reposting Reider's post.

Walter was one of New Mexico's best high school football players in 2025. He led the Bulldawgs with 197 tackles, 20 of which were for a loss, and also led them with seven sacks while also recording 19 quarterback hurries and two interceptions.
Walter received 6A first-team All-State honors from the New Mexico High School Coaches Association and Defensive Player of the Year honors from the Las Cruces Sun-News for his performances. Walter played a crucial role in one of Las Cruces High's best seasons under coach Mark Lopez, which saw the Bulldawgs go 12-1, win the District 3-6A championship and reach the 6A state championship game.
Lopez is thrilled about Walter's commitment, telling the Sun-News that it's the culmination of all his hard work and a sign of how active UNM wants to be in recruiting New Mexican players.
"I'm incredibly proud of Denton and grateful to UNM and Coach Eck for the opportunity," Lopez said. "Denton is very deserving and I'm confident he will continue to grow and represent our program, school and community in the best way possible."
Walter begins his senior season with Las Cruces on Aug. 21 against Rio Rancho on the road. The Bulldawgs enter their 2026 campaign ranked No. 2 in New Mexico by MaxPreps, behind only reigning 6A state champion Cleveland.
