Darius Cooper earns significant endorsement from Jalen Hurts

Darius Cooper entered Philadelphia Eagles training camp fighting for his position on a rebuilt wide receiver depth chart. He has done enough through the opening practices to earn recognition from the most important evaluator in the offense.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Jalen Hurts identified Cooper as one of the Eagles receivers who has recently emerged in the quarterback’s eyes. Garafolo suggested Hurts believes Cooper’s production could increase significantly after he caught nine passes for 92 yards as an undrafted rookie last season.

The endorsement matches what Cooper has displayed throughout camp. He has consistently made difficult catches rather than accumulating empty production in practice, showing strong hands and the ability to finish plays in traffic.

His most memorable moment came during a goal-to-go period when he made a one-handed touchdown catch from Andy Dalton with All-Pro defensive back Cooper DeJean in coverage. Cooper has also produced against crowded coverage during team drills, strengthening his case for a place in Philadelphia’s receiver rotation.
DeVonta Smith remains the unquestioned leader of the room, but the hierarchy behind him has yet to be settled. Dontayvion Wicks has emerged as a leading candidate for a starting role, while Hollywood Brown provides veteran speed. First-round pick Makai Lemon is expected to contribute immediately once he moves beyond the hamstring issue that has limited him during camp.
Cooper must also separate himself from Johnny Wilson, Britain Covey, Elijah Moore and the other receivers competing for limited roster spots. His advantage is that he has already earned Hurts’ trust during regular-season action. Cooper went from an undrafted free agent out of Tarleton State to a contributor who appeared in meaningful games as a rookie. He also caught a pass in Philadelphia’s wild-card loss to San Francisco.
Nine receptions do not guarantee an expanded role, but they established a foundation. Cooper has used training camp to demonstrate that he can handle more. Hurts noticing that growth may be the strongest indication yet that Cooper is becoming more than a roster-bubble receiver. He is beginning to look like a legitimate candidate for offensive snaps.
