Texas Southern hires new head basketball coach 3 months before opener

Texas Southern's nearly four-month search to fill its vacant head men's basketball coaching position is finally over. A source confirmed to Chron that Seton Hall assistant coach Corey Lowery is the Tigers' new head coach.

Lowery's hiring comes after former head coach Johnny Jones accepted an assistant coaching job at LSU on April 7.
For months, TSU has been the only Division I program without a permanent head basketball coach. TSU fired Athletic Director Kevin Granger in March after an investigation into sexual assault allegations. It then named Shyrone Chatman, who had been on the Tigers' staff for nine seasons, interim head coach on April 20.
On June 3, TSU hired DHR Global to conduct a search for both a coach and athletics director. That process came to an end Monday morning as TSU President J.W. Crawford announced in a press release that the university had identified its finalists.
"The searches for these two critical leadership positions have been thorough and deliberate," Crawford said in a statement. "We appreciate the dedication and hard work of our search committees and the many individuals who contributed to this process. I look forward to presenting my recommendations to the Board of Regents later this month."
Who is Texas Southern's Corey Lowery?
Jon Rothstein, a college basketball insider, reported Sunday that Texas Southern had appointed Lowery as the Tigers' new head coach. A university source confirmed the news Tuesday to Chron.
Lowery is a seasoned coach with 27 years of experience, including 16 as a head coach. He was a member of Shaheen Holloway's staff for four seasons at Seton Hall. Lowery also has HBCU head coaching experience.
After two seasons as head coach at Pennsylvania's Lincoln University, Lowery was named 2021-2022 CIAA Coach of the Year. Lincoln was predicted to finish 10th in the preseason poll but finished second in the Northern Division that year.
The TSU Board of Regents, which would need to approve the hire, is not currently scheduled to meet until Aug. 28. Texas Southern's preseason basketball practice is expected to start soon as classes begin Aug. 17. The university has not yet planned an introductory press conference.
The NCAA Division I men's basketball season will begin on Nov. 1. TSU has not released its season schedule.
