While the Boston Red Sox were able to complete the sweep yesterday against the San Francisco Giants, their starting pitcher Jake Bennett was lit up in the first couple of innings, giving up three runs before Boston had a chance to score.

When he was first called up, Bennett was a phenom for the Red Sox. However, in his past few, it’s looking like the innings he’s pitched are catching up to him.

Through his first 10 starts, Bennett looked perfect. He was 5-3 with a 2.58 ERA, 42 strikeouts, and a 0.940 WHIP in 59.1 innings pitched.
With his hot start, it looked like Boston absolutely won the trade for him with the Washington Nationals. Although, now it seems like something is wrong with their rising star in his recent starts.
Recent starts have shown cracks

Bennett has been getting blown up in his past five starts, and it seems the greatness he had in the first 10 starts is losing its luster.
In his last 10 starts, Bennett has posted a 2-3 record, a 5.40 ERA, 25 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.340 over 28 innings pitched.
To be fair to him, it’s not really his fault, as he’s just hit his current limit. He’s dozens of innings over his career-high before this season, and he had Tommy John surgery just a couple years ago.
Can he recover?

The big question is, can he recover before October? While they won’t need him in the Wild Card round, they will need him if they make it to the ALDS.
Most likely, he’ll be fine. Looking at yesterday’s start, while he did give up three runs early, he got better and better as the game went on.
In his first time through the order, Bennett gave up four hits, a walk, a homer, and three runs. His second time, he gave up two hits. His third, one. He then got two outs in his fourth, and then was pulled out of the game.
Bennett still has it, it’s just he’s getting a little tired. Hopefully, he can right the course before the playoffs, and become the phenom Boston knows him to be once more.
