Former Spartan OL earns spot on Chicago Bears active roster

In the National Football League, teams are forced to cut their rosters down to 53 players, and just a select number of training camp participants are put on the active roster. Former Michigan State offensive lineman Luke Newman was on the good side of training camp news. Newman got the news that he had made the active roster for the Bears.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Newman played for the Bears in 2025 where he was a backup guard during his rookie season. He will get his chance to compete for a starting guard spot for the Bears this season.
A standout at Holy Cross, the Bloomfield Hills (MI) native came to Michigan State for the 2024 season, where he was the best offensive lineman on the Spartans roster.

Unfortunately, undrafted free agents Wayne Mathews and Omari Kelly were not on the active roster, meaning the Bears are moving on from them, but still may aim to put them on the practice squad.
