Tadej Pogacar to miss World Road Cycling Championships after Vuelta crash injuries

Tadej Pogacar will miss the World Road Cycling Championships from Sept. 20-27 due to season-ending injuries from a crash at the Vuelta a Espana last Saturday.
Pogacar, a five-time Tour de France champion from Slovenia, sustained a concussion and C7 cervical vertebrae and open clavicle fractures.

“Of course, this isn’t the way I wanted my season to finish," Pogacar said, according to his team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG, which also announced his contract extension through 2032. "Right now, the most important thing is to recover properly and give my body the time it needs. It has been a season with many special moments, and I’m proud of what we achieved together. Now I’ll focus on getting healthy, supporting the guys from home, and coming back next year ready for what’s ahead.”
A medical director said Pogacar "is progressing well following surgery, and we are very satisfied with his recovery to this point."
Pogacar was leading the Vuelta when he crashed during stage eight of 21, bidding to become the ninth man to win all three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta).
Pogacar's crash will also keep him from pursuing another rare hole in his resume at the World Championships in Montreal from Sept. 20-27. While he won the last two world titles in the road race, he has yet to make a podium in the time trial.
Worlds are expected to be headlined by Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who can become the first man or woman to win four consecutive time trial titles.
The U.S. roster features 2024 Olympic women's road race champion Kristen Faulkner, 2018 World mountain bike champion Kate Courtney in her road worlds debut and Taylor Knibb, an Olympic medalist in triathlon's mixed relay who is a contender to win the Ironman World Championships triathlon on Oct. 10 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
