As usual, the Bundesliga club did not say how long the 29-year-old has signed for, but were gushing in their praise.

"In every development process of a team, you need anchors. Maxi is a key anchor of our team," board member for sport Jochen Saier said in a statement on Thursday.

Eggestein joined Freiburg from Werder Bremen in 2021 and helped them to runners-up finishes in the German Cup in 2022 and in the Europa League last season.

"It was a good fit between the club and me from the start," the German said. "I want to continue to be part of this really successful story that we have experienced here in recent years - and hopefully it will continue."

Eggestein has made 218 competitive appearances for Freiburg so far, scoring 15 goals. Freiburg also recently extended with other key midfielder Vincenzo Grifo.

The Black Forest club have won all five matches so far this term across competitions and host struggling Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.
