Simmons heaped praise on the quarterback throughout last season, as he led New England to their first Super Bowl since Tom Brady left.
However, the sports podcaster was brutally honest in his assessment of Maye’s struggles on the opening night of the 2026 season.

After coming close to winning the MVP last season, Drake Maye struggled in the playoffs despite the Patriots’ successful run.
However, the quarterback was let off because his team was winning and some thought he was playing through injury.
Bill Simmons has consistently defended Maye, but he only had negative comments about his dreadful performance against the Seahawks.
In a clip posted on the Bill Simmons YouTube channel, he explained: “Obviously, I watch every Pats game. He was lights-out the entire year last year, and [his struggles] really started with the playoffs, when I didn’t think he was healthy.
“He looked healthy in this game. That’s the thing. There are no excuses this time. He was scrambling around. He looked like the Drake Maye from the first four months of last season.
“They were 3rd and 1s, controlled draw sweeps… that’s what they did last year, and he still sucked.”
The Patriots will return to Foxborough to face the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday, which already feels like a must-win game.
If Maye continues to struggle early in the season, the Patriots will soon risk missing out on the playoffs one year after making the Super Bowl.
