‘Not good’: 49ers receive latest injury updates on Jake Tonges and De’Zhaun Stribling

The San Francisco 49ers have received mixed injury news after their 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams, with Jake Tonges facing a concerning MCL injury while De’Zhaun Stribling avoided the worst-case scenario.

Tonges was hurt during the victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and needed assistance off the field before being ruled out. Kyle Shanahan later gave a blunt assessment of the tight end’s situation, saying “it’s not good” before adding that further evaluation was still needed.
The injury is particularly significant given Tonges’ role behind George Kittle. He recorded 34 receptions for 293 yards and five touchdowns last season before signing a two-year, $8 million contract with San Francisco this year.

Stribling also suffered an injury during the game, initially leaving with an ankle problem before returning and then going down again on the following possession.
There had been speculation that the rookie wide receiver had suffered an Achilles injury because it was a non-contact issue. However, Shanahan confirmed after the game that Stribling’s Achilles was intact and that the injury was to his ankle.
Adam Schefter reported: “49ers WR De’Zhaun Stribling had an injured ankle, per HC Kyle Shanahan, who added the rookie’s Achilles was intact.”
Stribling was ultimately ruled out and did not record a reception or target in his first regular-season appearance. He will now undergo further evaluations to determine the extent of the ankle injury.
Tonges’ situation appears more concerning, with the MCL injury potentially keeping him out for a significant period depending on its severity. The 49ers currently have Luke Farrell behind Kittle, while rookies Kahlil Dinkins and Brayden Willis are on the practice squad.
