BOSTON — Russell Westbrook shocked everyone this summer when he announced his retirement from the game of basketball. After 18 strong seasons in the NBA, Westbrook officially left the game, doing so on his terms in an announcement video posted throughout social media.

Westbrook finished his tremendous career playing with the Sacramento Kings last season, alongside guys like DeMar DeRozan, Domantas Sabonis, and Zach LaVine. The season quickly went awry as the Kings tumbled down the standings due to injuries, but Westbrook laid it all out on the floor every time he played, something Kings fans appreciated.
LaVine was recently in Boston at New Balance’s “The Track” for the second annual Beantown Elite Experience. It was there that the two-time NBA All-Star spoke exclusively with ClutchPoints about his role in the camp and, among other things, Russell Westbrook’s surprising retirement announcement.

“I mean, Russ is one of the best humans I’ve met,” LaVine told ClutchPoints during the sit-down interview. “On the court, off the court. The dude has an energy like you’ve never seen before and I played against him. I came to the league in 2014, a couple years later, I think he won MVP. It was hell trying to guard him when I was younger, especially when I was 19, 20 years old and he’s going straight downhill at you. We’ve had plenty of conversations and we’ve worked out together and played. But Russ is one of my good friends. My hat’s off to him for a hell of a career. He had a lot more to give to basketball too. He could have kept playing, but I’m glad that he that he walked away on his own terms because not everybody gets to do that.”
In his 18 years in the NBA playing for seven different franchises, Russell Westbrook finished his career averaging 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. He also finished first in NBA history in triple-doubles with 209, 14th in total points with 27,176 points scored, fifth in total assists with 10,351 assists, and 14th in total steals with 2,038 steals.
